Technical Communication

Mission:   The Technical Communication Committee’s broad mission is to explore and address issues and opportunities related to the curricular presence of technical communication at Georgia Tech. More specifically, we aim to (1) further develop and improve upon outcomes, assessment, and pedagogical approaches of the Writing and Communication Program’s 3403 course; and (2) to explore opportunities to extend and promote the curricular presence of technical communication.

Membership: The chair of the committee is invited to serve by the Director in consultation with the Assistant Director of Writing and Communication. Members on the Technical Communication Committee are invited by the chair of the committee, in consultation with the Director and Assistant Director of Writing and Communication.

2011-2012 Committee

Goals:       (1) Revise and compose publicity materials for Tech Comm minor, and distribute to advisors, students, the Office of New Student and Sophomore Programs (for inclusion in FASET), and LCC’s website. (2) Establish program goals, outcomes, syllabi, and assessment for Tech Comm Masters program. (3) Establish policies and resources for 3403:

Continue adding Tech Comm resources to the WOVENText (eBook).

Establish syllabus/assignment guidelines for 3403.

Compose position statement for 3403.

Schedule syllabus workshops for 3403 (maybe in TC seminar, maybe in orientation).

Put someone from TC Committee on Britt hiring committee.

(4) Establish a Tech Comm presence on TECHStyle.

Accomplishments. The 2010-11 committee drafted a poster and brochure to promote the technical communication minor. Revisited course outcomes and objectives, including evaluating and reassessing overall pedagogical continuity and curricular focus. Explored options for implementing a portfolio-based assessment system. Updated the pedagogical archives of readings on BF T-Square site. The 2009-10 committee refined course outcomes and objectives and developed pedagogical archives with a collection of readings on BF T-Square site. The 2008-09 committee created and received approval for LCC’s technical communication minor.
