We may not think of future scientists, mathematicians, and engineers as artists and storytellers whose work appeals to our aesthetic sensibilities. Student View, an annual exhibition of artifacts launched in 2012 as part of a collaborative effort by the Writing and Communication Program and the Ferst Center to promote innovative work by Georgia Tech students, aims to change our preconceptions by revealing talents that may otherwise go unnoticed and unheralded. Opening this week at the Ferst Center Galleries and continuing through April 2013, the exhibition will coincide with the TechArts Festival, a campus-wide celebration of the creative arts on April 11 through 13, and attract the attention of a wide audience. Additionally, students’ unique work will be on display in the Clough Undergraduate Learning Commons and the Stephen C. Hall Building.

It takes a critical mind, a discerning eye for nuance, an aural sensibility, and audience awareness to produce an aesthetically appealing and intellectually stimulating artifact. Student View provides an excellent opportunity for students and faculty to showcase those very qualities. It creates a space to celebrate the work of students whose enthusiasm and diverse skills have led to accomplishments that exceed the original goals of a given assignment. Based on Georgia Tech’s Writing and Communication Program’s WOVEN approach to teaching and learning, all of the artifacts on display skillfully integrate multiple modes and media of composition—written, oral, visual, electronic, and nonverbal. Ranging from posters and photo essays to websites, videos, 3D objects, book art, and songs, all of the artifacts reflect a thoughtful and critical engagement with a chosen topic and translate concepts and ideas into compelling multimodal designs.
